Lash Lifting VS Lash Extensions

By May 6, 2019April 29th, 2022Lash Extensions, Lash Lifts

Lashes are the hottest trend right now in the beauty community. Whether you are a strip lash gal, or someone who layers 3 different mascaras, we have all at one point contemplated lash extensions or a lash lift. It can be confusing to determine which service would be the best fit for you, but I am here to break it down for you to help you decide which lash enhancing service would suit you!

Lash extensions, they can really dramatically change the way you look, but they’re not for everyone. They’re exactly what the name says, extensions on your lashes. Whether they are Classics (1 extension to 1 natural lash), or Volumes (fan of lashes to 1 natural lash), extensions are extensions and I hate to break it to you, but not everyone is a good candidate. When it comes to the initial application, lash extensions typically take 2 hours to apply, where lash lifting only takes roughly 45 minutes. If you don’t feel confident that you can lay still for that long, they might not be for you.

For those of you who have oily skin, you may have oily eyelids as well, but there are people who have more dry skin that have oily eyelids as well. Evaluate the skin type of your lids before you decide on extensions because I am sorry, but oil breaks down the adhesive used to bond the extensions to your natural lashes. Meaning, they won’t last very long on those who have oily eyelids.

Now that spring is about to arrive, allergies are about to be in full swing. If you have bad allergies and your eyes water really bad, itch, and get irritated, they may not be the best idea for you. When your eyes water really bad, it can loosen the glue and you may experience premature fallout. This is also something that can happen if you have dry eyes. That may sound strange to you if you don’t have this problem, but those who have dry eyes know, that they water all the time. Also, if you’re eyes get itchy, you wouldn’t be able to just scratch and rub at your eyes whenever you please. This can cause a lot of damage. Not only could you rip out an extension, but you might rip out a natural lash as well.

I know I just made several cases to many people that would make you no longer want lash extensions, but yet they still want something to enhance their lashes without having to do something everyday. That is where lash lifting comes into play! Lash lifting is for everyone. Whether your lashes have a little curl to them or stick straight out, this service will make a big difference to your natural lashes with the use of 2 solutions. Lash lifting is a totally safe treatment that basically is a perm for your lashes. Don’t be scared, it is 100% safe and does not give off the fumes like a perm for your hair on your head would be. Instead of having to use a lash curler and get that funky L shaped look, with a lash lift, you’ll get that beautiful C curl without having to do anything to your lashes! There are different size rods for people who have different length of lashes. Everything is done specifically and customized for your lashes!

What if you’re reading this and you don’t feel like you have any contraindications for lash extensions and you cannot decide between extensions and a lash lift? Let me talk to you about aftercare for both. Sometimes we don’t realize how much maintenance can go into certain beauty services, this way, you can decide which would be best suited for you based on your confidence with aftercare!

Lash Lifting After Care

With lash lifting, you don’t have to worry about not using certain products that can damage the service. Those of you who have had lash extensions before may know what I am talking about. One of the luxuries of lash lifting versus extensions is that you only have to wait 24 hours after the service before you can wear as much makeup as you want, and clean your face with your favorite cleanser. During the first 24 hours, the solutions that were applied to achieve the lift, will set. While that is happening, it is recommended that you do not soak your lashes in water (be careful while washing your face), stay away from all makeup, and then any skin care products that have a lot of oil in them. Once the 24 hours is up, feel free to do as you please and put on a little mascara for that added drama, but know, that it won’t be necessary with a beautiful Elleebana Lash Lift!

Lash Extension After Care

Lash extensions have a lot more after care than the lash lift. First off, you need to be gentle with your eyes now. Don’t rub or pull on your eyelashes, because it can cause damage to your natural lashes, or they might fall out. For 24-48 hours after your appointment, you need to keep the lashes dry. That means being super careful while washing your face and while bathing. Also, that means no saunas, pools, hot tubs, etc. The first 24-48 hours is when the bond really develops. Oil breaks down the adhesive, so no using oil-based skin care, products, or makeup. It will make your lash extensions fall out prematurely. Throughout the day, try not to touch your lashes, your hands have oils and dirt on them that can damage the lashes. Using specific makeup remover and cleansers will ensure that your lashes stay healthy and last as long as possible. Do not use eyelash curlers or perming solutions with lash extensions. They can get stuck and rip them out, or give them a kink that is not the most pleasing to look at. When removing your makeup, use a wash cloth or cotton round, NO cotton balls. They can get stuck in your lashes and nobody wants white cotton fuzzies in their lashes.

I know it’s more work, but still make sure you are washing your face and all of your makeup off. Healthy lashes are happy lashes! Using gentle downwards motions will help remove your makeup without disturbing your lash extensions. Or, you can apply oil free makeup remover to a disposable mascara wand and remove your makeup by brushing through the lashes. Ensure that you are removing all of the makeup though! If you absolutely have to wear mascara, which you really shouldn’t, it has to be washable on the tips only and not waterproof. Waterproof mascara will ruin your lash extensions. Do not attempt to remove any of your lashes on your own. If you want them removed before they fall out naturally, there is a specific remover that your lash technician can use. If you try to remove them yourself, you risk pulling out natural lashes and causing damage. Last but not least, brush through your lashes every day. This will make sure they don’t get stuck together, they are laying in the right directions, and they look the best they can! I know it’s a lot, but lash extensions are BEAUTIFUL and if you want them, go out and get yourself a set of stunning lashes!

Lash Lifting Upkeep

Lash lift upkeep is fairly easy. After that first 24 hours, you can do as you please with your products and makeup. The lift lasts anywhere from 4-12 weeks. The reason there is a gap is that just like with other services, everyone is different. Our bodies natural oil production, our sleep habits, etc. will have an effect. Overall, the last lift lasts a long time and there are no maintenance visits.

Lash Extensions Upkeep

Lash extensions have some maintenance to them. Every 2-3 weeks it is required to get a fill-in to make sure that the lashes stay nice, full, and uniform. As long as you have 40% of your full set still on, a lash fill would be all you need. Unfortunately, some people don’t take as good care of their lashes and a lot fall out prematurely. If this is the case, and there are less than 40% of the full set on, then a new set would be required.
