How Does Laser Tattoo
Removal Work?

When your tattoo is applied, thousands of ink particles are deposited into the deeper layers of the skin, known as the dermis. Your body’s general reaction to foreign particles is to absorb and eradicate them, but the ink particles are too large for eradication, so they remain visible. During laser tattoo removal, laser energy is used to destroy the ink particles, turning them into thousands of tiny pigments that can be absorbed by the body.

We use cutting-edge technologies that selectively target the unwanted ink particles — not the surrounding skin tissues. We deliver concentrated pulses of laser energy of specific wavelengths to break the ink particles into tiny pieces that can be removed via the lymphatic system. Each laser tattoo removal session targets unwanted tattoo pigments on one layer of the skin, so you need multiple sessions to remove the pigments from deeper layers.

Most patients need around 8 laser tattoo removal sessions spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart. You need intervals between sessions to give your body enough time to absorb and eradicate the unwanted tattoo ink pigments. After all of your treatments, the tattoo will be gone completely. Some patients experience mild skin discoloration after the treatment. The outcome is best when you follow the post-treatment guidelines accurately.

Step-by-Step Laser Tattoo Removal

Step 1: Consultation & Evaluation

Your laser tattoo removal journey starts with an evaluation. The service provider examines the unwanted tattoos in the targeted areas, including their location, size, density, depth, and color. The aforementioned factors determine the number of treatments necessary to remove the tattoo completely. After evaluating your condition, the service provider will recommend the ideal number of treatments necessary to achieve the desired goals.

Step 2: The Procedure

During the laser tattoo removal procedure, the service provider will cleanse the treatment areas and apply a numbing gel for comfort. You must wear protective eyeglasses for the procedure. The service provider will channel highly concentrated pulses of laser energy into the tattoos on your skin. The laser energy will destroy the pigments, facilitating their expulsion from the body via the lymphatic system. We adjust the device to prevent it from harming your skin tissues.

Step 3: Aftercare & Follow-Up

You must follow your service provider’s aftercare guidelines to minimize the risk of scabs, scarring, and skin discoloration. You will have to stop taking certain blood-thinning medications, such as Aspirin, for a few days. The service provider will offer a detailed set of aftercare guidelines after your procedure. You will also have to return for follow-up sessions once every 6 to 8 weeks for around 8 sessions, following which you can appreciate smooth, tattoo-free skin.

The 3 Phases of Laser Treatment

Phase 1: Inflammatory Phase

Hematosis and inflammation are the earliest side effects of laser tattoo removal. After an injury, the cell membranes release vasoconstrictors to limit hemorrhage. After a short period, capillary vasodilation will occur secondary to local histamine release, and the inflammation cells will move to the wound bed. The platelets release epidermal growth factors, and the scavenger cells remove wound debris and stimulate collagen production.

Phase 2: Proliferative Phase

After the early inflammation, re-epithelialization, angiogenesis, granulation tissue formation, and collagen production will occur. The normal layers of the epidermis will be restored after 2 to 3 days if the basement membrane remains intact. However, if the basement membrane is destroyed, the epidermis will be rebuilt completely from the periphery, which may take a longer period. As such, the results depend on the type of laser device used.

Phase 3: Maturational Phase

Over time, the wound will undergo contraction, leading to the minute visibility of scar tissues. The three phases will overlap each other or repeat in a cycle, leading to the formation of new collagen fibers and skin cells over an extended period. Over time, the wound will reveal a tensile strength that’s 30% of normal skin, and collagen production will increase for 21 days. All of these factors will gradually stimulate skin rejuvenation.
